We know about black holes, exoplanets, supernovas, quantum mechanics, astrophysics, brain function, and human cell mechanics. We know about the natural world, the spiritual world, behavioral sciences, and how to identify and categorize human behaviors. We create machines that mimic human thought, learn on their own, make decisions independent of us, and do more, better, and faster than humans can do.

We have even created machines that sing Christian music and teach Christian subjects. Some even “prophesy“. (And professing Believers follow them.)

We know more about the Universe in which we live than any generation before us. Why then are we unable to “get our act together” and live in such a way that we do not make ourselves obsolete, leading to extinction? (Many believe that’s the path we’re on.)

Why? Because there are still things we do not know–but humanity as a whole will not admit this. We “marvel at our own magnificence” yet fail to recognize that we have gotten (as my grandmother would say of someone with an arrogant attitude) “too big for our britches”.

There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not: The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid. (Pro 30:18-19 KJV)

The writer in today’s Scripture passage uses simple, everyday illustrations to make his point. We tend to look on such simple things as beneath us. They’re not. Points to consider in our present-day culture: 1.) Intelligence is not wisdom, and 2.) Increasing knowledge does not make us wiser. Never confuse the two.

We can now blow up the planet, make designer viruses, disrupt ecosystems, control weather, go to Mars, and more. But is this better?

We have been to the brink of thermo-nuclear war, seen global pandemics, and have technology that can redefine what it means to be human. But is this wise?

For all that, we are still unable to get along with each other to the point that we have “wars and rumors of wars” in unprecedented quantity and frequency. So, we are not growing wiser but only better able to act out our destructive tendencies. (This is what I see, anyway.)

When we cannot peaceably agree in “church” communities, how can we agree as a nation or as a global community? Is all this intelligence and knowledge helping us? If it is, I cannot see it.

I see what we need; it is clear in Scripture: We need WISDOM. Without wisdom, we have little hope of being better, regardless of how much intelligence we amass.

Back to the writer of today’s passage, we now know how an eagle flies, how a snake moves, and how a ship sails. We still, however, cannot control basic human behavior because we have largely abandoned wisdom, which separates us from God.

Wisdom is still available. It always has been. God admonishes us to get it from Him, the only source of TRUE WISDOM. We must–while we still can. This message is not a how-to or a what-for. It is a must-do. Seek God for wisdom … while there is time.
