When you look in a mirror, what do you see? You, of course, see a physical image. This is not my point. I am asking about the image you “see” in your spirit and your mind. How do you see yourself there?
The image you see there will determine what you do, think, and feel. It will influence how you react to and in virtually every situation that occurs in your life. It will either propel you to greater spiritual heights of faith or compel you to sink to lower depths in attitude, which can limit (if not eliminate) your faith. This is why it is important to be honest about what you see.
Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything–all she had to live on.” (Mark 12:41-44 NIV)
In today’s Scripture passage, Jesus taught His disciples a very important lesson. He saw a widow put money in the temple treasury and told them that she put in more than anyone else. Do you think they looked at each other with “that” look?
They may have rolled their eyes and thought, “Oh, He’s just being Jesus again.” They just saw an old woman putting in a pittance that would not make a difference. No big thing to God. After all, what could be done with that little bit? Right?
Wrong. Very wrong. They were not seeing as God saw. This is what Jesus wanted to change in them. He taught them to see as God sees, not as the world system sees. He taught them to see through spiritual eyes rather than physical, logical, or financial eyes.
I ask you to do something today. Find a mirror. Look at your reflection in it. (Yes, really.) Will you do this? FYI: This is not rhetorical.
As you look, ask yourself what you see. Ask it–out loud. Be honest about what you see. I am not talking about your clothes or your facial features. Who and what do you see that you are in your spirit? What does the “real you” look like to you?
Then ask yourself: Is this what God sees? And take your time; don’t blow it off. Then ask God to enable you to see yourself as He sees you. This is the most important part of the exercise.
Do not expect an immediate answer. I am not saying you will not get one. You may, although it is not likely, because such answers typically come in time. Begin seeking to understand how God sees you. Understanding this will be a process–and the understanding that comes from that process has the potential to transform your life. Whether it does or not will be up to you.
This is the point: Once you can see yourself as God sees you, you can begin living from that vision (what you look like in God’s vision). More importantly, you can begin acting from that vision. It is, after all, who you really are. Once you cross that line, nothing will ever be the same (in a good way).
One more thing: Prepare yourself to be shocked. You THINK you know how God sees you. You don’t. I have not yet encountered anyone who, after they got the revelation of how God sees them, said it was the same as they thought before. You may be the first … but I doubt it.
You won’t see as God sees unless you intend to see. Let God reveal it to you. Be open to Him.
