I look at the heavens you made with your hands. I see the moon and the stars you created. And I wonder, “Why are people so important to you? Why do you even think about them? Why do you care so much about humans? Why do you even notice them?” (Psa 8:3-4 ERV)
David asked a very good question!
How good was it? Beyond his comprehension, good, it was. Literally. This is why I say that:
The image above is of a galaxy. There are billions to trillions of stars in each galaxy … and … there are trillions of galaxies in the observable Universe. This is a number beyond our reasonable comprehension as humans.
Sure, we can comprehend the math abstractly, but to actually comprehend that number in real-time understanding is, well, beyond us. To prove it, this is the number:
There are an estimated 200 sextillion stars in the observable universe–and that’s a low estimate. This number is written as 200,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. Can you practically comprehend it? Of course not. Though you can see it as you read this, none of us has a realistic grasp on such a number.
To add a little more boggle to it, the Universe may be larger than we presently know. As our technology grows, we continually learn that it is larger than previously understood.
Why am I giving you a science lesson in a discipleship message? I want to show you that David’s question was crazy good. Of course, all David knew about were the stars he could see at night (which comprised only a small view of one spiral arm of our own Milky Way galaxy). But even with that, it is a remarkable question.
Given what we now know of the scale of the Universe (that David could not see in his day), how much more remarkable is it that God not only knows OF us but knows each individual one of us intimately to the point that He knows how many hairs we have on our heads? “And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” (Mat 10:30 NIV)
Personal opinion: I believe this means that He not only knows the total number but also knows which one is hair number 30,497 versus hair number 79,201. We each have up to 120,000. With a global population currently exceeding eight billion people, 8,000,000,000 x 120,000 is a lot of hair–960,000,000,000,000 to be precise. Can’t practically comprehend that any better, can you? Me neither.
And we each as individuals are significantly more important to God than all this. He values us to the point that Jesus died in our place so we could be reconciled to Him. This, too is beyond our comprehension in any practical sense. We can only accept it through the gift of faith.
The bottom line is that we cannot truly comprehend how many stars are out there. Much less can we comprehend how much God cares for us. This brings me to an important question I want to ask you as I close today. It is a difficult question to answer if you take it seriously. And please do! Here it is:
Given how much God cares for you, how much then do you care for Him?
