Have you noticed that the toughest questions always begin with the word, “Why?”

Why did I lose that job?

Why do bad things happen to good people?

Why this heartache, this adversity?

The cry of Jesus from the Cross was a cry of dereliction. God turned away from His Son, and Jesus cried out, “Why?”

The first answer is that God is holy, and He cannot look upon sin.

And the second answer is that Jesus, who knew no sin, paid the price for your sin and for my sin.

In other words, God treated Jesus as if He had lived your life so that He could treat you as if you had lived the life of Jesus.

Jesus was forsaken in order that you and I, who are in Christ, will never be forsaken.

Why?

Because He loves us that much.
